What is wrong with this demonstration of sombrada? I can count 4 things just by watching the first 10 seconds of the video. How many can you come up with and what are they? As a hint, watch carefully. Does it display any of our training principles? Don’t look so much at what they are doing {unless you do not know sombrada at all} but watch what they are NOT doing.
Sombrada teaches a lot of good things, but not when done like this.
Why do I say “chi” or “ki” is not real? The main reason is that many people like to claim it is some sort of external “force” or “energy”.
Most of the effects which are often attributed to “chi” or “ki” can be simply explained by CBM: “Coordinated Body Motion”. Some systems and styles call this “Single Unit Moving” or something similar.
That being said, some demonstrations of “ki” and “chi” are simply BS. It usually involves people who want to believe and are either consciously or subconsciously going along with the techniques, just like they do with the Dillman-style “no-touch knockouts”.

A men’s rights group is accusing a California city of violating civil rights laws because the city is offering free self-defense classes that are only open to women and girls.
The Glendale News-Press reported Thursday that Harry M. Crouch, the president of the National Coalition of Men, sent a letter to the city of Glendale, the city’s Commission on the Status of Women and the company leading the classes demanding men and boys be allowed to attend the classes as well.
Crouch writes that by offering the classes to only women the parties involved are violating the equal protection clause of the Constitution.
“It is especially troubling that the City, its Commission on the Status of Women, and Shield Self Defense would deny men and boys access to their self-defense classes in April, which is Sexual Assault Awareness Month,” Crouch said. “Why the City, its Commission on the Status of Women, and Shield Self Defense do not want men and boys to be just as prepared as women and girls to defend themselves against sexual assault is outrageous.”
The Glendale News-Press reports that the Commission on the Status of Women has been holding the classes for years on city property in April to recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The classes are paid for through fundraising.
Crouch told the paper this is the first year his organization has complained because it just became aware of the classes.
“It always astounds me that some of our governmental agencies who are charged with protecting us from violations of law simply acquiesce to things like this,” he said.
City officials told the paper they are in the process of researching the matter, and that federal law could possibly permit women’s only self-defense classes. The officials said they are now investigating state law on the issue, and may consider reviewing the class structure if necessary.

“Giving cops a “get out jail free card” to have sex with the very prostitutes they’re investigating – hey, what could go wrong?
A lot, say critics of the unusual Hawaiian law. State legislators included language to end the practice in a new bill cracking down on prostitution this week, though the change was removed following police testimony that claimed the protection was essential for undercover operations.
The amended bill passed the state house and is scheduled to go before a Senate committee Friday. However, some local advocates seek to get the ban reinstated at that Senate reading.”
On Sunday, April 1, 2012, a Louisiana man was choked to death by his younger cousin. Stephen A. Arceneaux III, a 24-year-old from Destrehan, was pronounced dead at 10:39 p.m. Sunday night, April 1, 2012. The two were at a house party and began wrestling around on an inflated mattress when the 14-year-old, 110 lbs. younger cousin placed Arceneaux in a Rear Naked Choke. After 30-40 seconds, witnesses noticed Arceneaux was turning blue so the choke was released. Arceneaux’s girlfriend tried unsuccessfully to revive him before he was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
In the wake of the tragic accident that occurred last week, the Gracie Brothers provide a video breakdown explaining precisely how Stephen Arceneaux III was choked to death by his younger cousin. Their hope is to educate the youth about the serious risks of practicing jiu-jitsu techniques, chokes in particular, without proper training and supervision.
